Leonard Campaign Applauds Michigan House Passage of Property Tax Reform

DeWitt, MI — The Michigan House recently took an important step toward protecting homeowners by passing House Bill 4583, a proposal designed to help limit the rapid increases many Michigan families are seeing in their property tax bills.
Tom Leonard applauded lawmakers for advancing the proposal, which would move local millage elections to the November ballot in even-numbered years, when voter turnout is highest.
When Leonard's campaign released the first edition of The Path Forward in September of last year, it outlined a comprehensive policy agenda for Michigan that included the proposal aimed at property tax relief by ensuring major local tax decisions occur when most voters participate.
“Across Michigan, families are opening their property tax bills and asking the same question: how much more are they going to take from me?" Leonard said. "Property taxes keep going up, and for a lot of people, they don't know how they are going to remain in their homes. That frustration is exactly why we included this proposal in our first edition of The Path Forward, and because we are serious about offering real solutions to take on rising property taxes."
Leonard said the growing momentum behind the idea shows how important it is for campaigns to put forth real policy solutions, not just high-level talking points.
“When we launched The Path Forward, the goal was to move Michigan's political conversation beyond slogans and toward real solutions that help families with struggling costs,” Leonard said. “It's encouraging to see lawmakers beginning to move ideas like this forward."
Leonard hopes this is the first of many policy ideas from The Path Forward to move through the Legislature and reach the Governor’s desk.
“In the very near future, I’ll be releasing our next proposal,” Leonard said. “I look forward to seeing which candidates are willing to sign on."
